ABOUT DR. SUSSMAN

Dr. Walter Sussman is board certified in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R). Dr. Sussman also has fellowship training and board certification in Sports Medicine.

Dr. Sussman graduated from the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine in Biddeford Maine, before completing his residency in PM&R at Emory University, where he served as chief resident. He then completed a fellowship in sports medicine at Emory University where he provided covered for the Atlanta Dream WNBA team, Georgia Tech athletics, and Emory University athletics. Dr. Sussman has served locally as the Head Team Physician for the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, and and provides care for many of the local high schools. He has worked with athletes from all recreational levels from high school to professional athletes.

Dr. Sussman has a clinical interest in the use of ultrasound to diagnose musculoskeletal injuries and regenerative medicine. Dr. Sussman co-authored The Atlas of Interventional Orthopedics textbook to help teach other physicians about ultrasound guided injections, minimally invasive ultrasound guided percutaneous surgical procedures, and regenerative procedures. Dr. Sussman has also published peer-reviewed articles and book chapters on ultrasound guided percutaneous surgical procedures, regenerative procedures, nerve hydrodissection and concussion management. He is a national leader in the field of regenerative medicine serving as a Board Member for the Interventional Orthobiologic Foundation (IOF) and is a member of the American Academy of PM&R Biologics Working group. He now serves as an Assistant Clinical Professor for Orthopedics and Rehabilitation for Tufts University School of Medicine and University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Dr. Sussman takes pride in promoting the patient experience, and tailoring treatments to fit each patient and their treatment goals. In 2020, Dr. Sussman founded Boston Sports & Biologics to offer patients a comprehensive approach to musculoskeletal injuries with a focus on providing patients with treatment options that may help them delay or avoid traditional orthopedic surgery.

Dr. Sussman manages both acute and chronic musculoskeletal injuries, and offers non-surgical alternatives to orthopedic surgery/conditions, including platelet rich plasma (PRP), regenerative autologous cellular injections and Tenex. Commonly treated conditions include arthritis, chronic tennis or golfers’ elbow, trigger finger, rotator cuff tears, calcific tendonitis, hip bursitis, patella tendonitis, Achilles tendonitis, Haglund deformity, and plantar fasciitis. Dr. Sussman also manages acute sports injuries and has completed specialized training in sports-related concussions. He has a clinical interest in post-concussion syndrome, and working with the athlete to develop a personalized return-to-play plan.
